Isis Maria Niedecken: Mitbringsel
NBB Gallery is pleased to announce Berlin based artist Isis Maria Niedecken’s first solo exhibition 'Mitbringsel’.
The genesis of the exhibition ‘Mitbringsel’ (engl. souvenirs) finds its roots in an unexpected source – a humble plastic bag, a holiday souvenir from a local grocery store in Lisbon. Adorned with prints of vibrant fruits and vegetables, these plastic bags, once commonplace, are now a rarity in Germany. For Isis Maria Niedecken, this simple, everyday object transcended its utilitarian purpose, transforming into a poignant symbol of nostalgia. Niedecken's fascination with plastics extends beyond the grocery bag, encompassing holiday-related items like inflatable animals and the ubiquitous monobloc chair. These seemingly mundane objects take center stage in her artistic exploration, becoming channels for memories and reflections on the transient nature of materials.
When wandering through Niedecken’s studio, one encounters not just canvases adorned with brushstrokes but also photographs from vacations, suspended like windows to moments frozen in time. These images serve as a mental retreat, transporting the artist back to cherished moments in southern Europe. Uninterested in iconic landmarks, Niedecken finds inspiration in the intimacy of family vacations, a theme that echoes in her still-life paintings. Her canvases capture scenes of sun-dappled tables with overlooked yet sentimental items – card games, sunglasses, fruit, or room keys. Each element is carefully chosen for its personal significance, transcending the ordinary to become an embodiment of memory. Niedecken's art, therefore, becomes a testament to her commitment to conveying emotions and preserving joyful memories.
In the midst of Berlin's often cloudy winter, Niedecken's work becomes a radiant infusion of Mediterranean sunshine. Through her art, she distills the essence of fleeting moments, offering viewers a chance to bask in the warmth of shared experiences. Dedicated to authentic expression, Niedecken's exhibition invites viewers into a world filled with nostalgia, personal reflection, and the enduring beauty found in everyday moments.
