Jamel Armand: The Gentle Westwind

Through creating art, Armand is able to connect to his Indonesian roots and ancestors. The four portraits in The Backroom depict members of ancient tribal communities in a timeless manner, capturing their essence and spirit. Using symbols and stories of the tribes, Armand strives to preserve their visual heritage but also imparts a sense of reverence and admiration for their cultural resilience. Despite being challenged throughout history, the artist focuses on the remarkable beauty and unyielding pride the protagonists of his portraits continue to embody. Armand works with different mediums such as acrylics, charcoal, oil and collage to create visually striking structures and surfaces. Bold palette and precise compositions are what makes Armand’s art so distinctive.
