We are very excited to present Kim Dorland's first solo show at NBB Gallery titled "I Hold With Those Who Favor Fire". The exhibition has an apocalyptic feel - much like Robert Frost's poem "Fire and Ice" from which the title of the exhibition derives- exploring themes such as nature, fire, destruction, melancholia, etc.
Influenced by the Canadian Landscape Painting tradition, the Canadian artist is known for depicting the landscapes of his surroundings, playing with the tactility of oil paint to create different textures within his works. The use of vivid colors also plays an important role in the visualization of his paintings and in what they convey to the viewer.
Dorland takes us on a journey into a destructive world in which he displays a colorful figurative pictorial program with a sinister feel. We are living in a world in which climate change and its consequences are our reality, yet not only it's literal fire which we are surrounded by, but also psychological fire-a manifestation of the subjects’ inner life. Thus the artist depicts not only the burning forests surrounding him but allows us reflect upon the world we all are living in... a world in flames.
