Miles Debas: Between Me and You...

Until December 1st 2023, the American artist Miles Debas presents his mixed media canvases in THE BACKROOM. “Between you and me…” acknowledges the intimate and personal connection that occurs between the artist, their work, and the viewers. Paintings are transmitters of human consciousness, and their magic is only possible in the viewer's gaze. Each observer applies their own set of associative possibilities and points of connection to a work of art.

“Often the painting demands that I do 'the wrong thing'. The unthinkable option; ripping it up or making it very bad to look at.” This approach allows for experimentation and the possibility of discovering hidden or obscured elements in the artwork. Debas tries to avoid overanalyzing his work while in the creative process. Ideally, the artist aims to enter a state of creative flow, where his intellectual and intuitive faculties work in harmony. In this state, there is no impulse to constantly evaluate or judge the progress of the work. This process often results in the artwork incorporating elements from Debas’ own experiences. It feels significant and meaningful, almost like destiny (kismet) and poetry. Sometimes, things that the artist's conscious mind had previously discarded or forgotten reappear in the artwork.
