Robert Pokorny: State of Mind
November 10 - December 01, 2023NBB Gallery is proud to present Los Angeles-based artist Robert Pokorny’s new solo exhibition, 'State of Mind’ opening November 10th, 2023. Pokorny’s latest portrait paintings are filled with his recurring stylized characters depicted in his raw, bold, and energetic style. In these new works, the artist renders each painting through his strong use of color, line, shape and technique, while exploring an amalgam of the human experience with insight and humor. His bearded men and a white haired woman; tinted by California’s counterculture and rock‘n’ roll, find themselves in various subtle psychological states riding a line between ugly, beautiful, solemn and euphoric. Pokorny’s work is autobiographical and universal with the duality of it left for the viewers interpretation.
"I use portraiture as an expression of myself, practice of my studio with an intentional dialogue between my own vision and great painters of the past. I don’t know if it’s age, context of the times, or where I’m at in life but I find myself tuning into internal feelings and emotions, and how it all relates in the outer world. These portraits are not meant to depict one person in particular but pictures of us all– the rich diversity of human dialogue, the moments of deep conflict, the pleasure of pure harmony and the journey of aging. My paintings are a personal marker of this time period, capturing moments that are seemingly absurd, sometimes humorous, but completely sincere.” (R. Pokorny, Long Beach CA, Oct. 2023)
