NBB Gallery is pleased to announce 'Us', a group exhibition curated by Thom Oosterhof.
The exhibition features new work by Gideon Rubin, Pieter Jennes, Charlie Roberts, Bobbi Essers, TJ Rinoski, Lindsey Bull, Giulia Messina, Dani Mckenzie, Bo Bosk, Stephen Whittaker, Anmar Mirza and J Carino.
The exhibition attempts to distill our intimate domestic selves into a collection of 20 paintings and works on paper. Recognizing the impossibility of this request, the exhibition will be presented annually, with each iteration presented differently with a different group of artists in a different gallery in a different country. In recognition of the eternally transient and vast nature of Us.
Us brings together 12 contributing artists from 10 different countries, each exploring how the self is formed in relation to each other, our domestic environments, and society at large. Taken together, these artworks mirror the viewer and provide an often-relatable reference point to parts of ourselves that are seen and unseen.
The physicality of our bodies as instruments of experience is unapologetically at the forefront of the works of Bobbi Essers and J Carino. With each refusing to withhold truths or parts of ourselves that may not be glorified at times.
Moreover, we are not ourselves without each other. Charlie Roberts and Anmar Mirza remind us, subtly or not, of this very point. The blurring of figures makes it impossible to distinguish between individuals, and the shifting perspectives challenge our preconceived notions of relationship.
Critical to our understanding of ourselves as a society are our domestic and personal environments. Whether it is a dimly lit room in TJ Rinoski's 'Vacation' or Stephen Whittaker's 'A View West', where object and nature coexist harmoniously, or in Giulia Messina's evocative and lived-in table settings, each reflects another dimension of ourselves through the object.
