Dani McKenzie is an Australian-born artist based in Naarm/Melbourne, whose work draws from a deep passion for street photography, everyday urban life, and the unique cultures that emerge in high-density cities. McKenzie graduated from the MFA program at the National Art School, Sydney in 2016.
Describing herself as an “ethical spy”, McKenzie uses painterly techniques to reinterpret her own street photographs, which predominantly feature strangers. By blurring the line between public and private space, her paintings create the impression of second-hand people watching - inviting viewers to share in her observations, both as those who are seeing and those who are being seen.
